Freckle Weather

What sunny weather we are having. Most agreeable. Sundress weather I think. Yes, most definitely sundress weather. Sandals even!

Of course, on this day of all days, I am sitting in an office watching the shorts-clad passersby go about their day. Normally I wouldn't consider myself a beach goer. However, I seem to find myself daydreaming about the possibility of venturing westward. Atlantis must be beautiful today. But then again, the lady who likes to sunbathe nude may be there. I have had more than one awkward meeting with her on sunny days such as this. Part of me really wants show up with a sketchpad and ask her if I can sketch her nude form. Obviously, I have no desire to do so. I just like to dwell on awkward experiences of my past and imagine how I could make them even more awkward.

Though I am big fan of business casual, (in case you were unaware, I am a big fan of business casual) today I would love to trade in my tights, pencil skirt, and wedges for cutoffs and a tank top.

Or, as mentioned before, a comfy sundress and strappy sandals.

Conspiracy Theory

I am suspicious. Today I am in the office of my second job, receptionist at a charter school. As my mind wanders (my duties are few and far between), I find my attention drawn to the business suite directly across my office. Often I have wondered about them. My mother and I have had a few conversations about their unusual habits. My curiosity prompted me to google them and now I am even more confused. Taitsu America, I don't trust you.
Their employees pee way too often. I am have never seen human beings go in and out of a bathroom so many times in one day (the suites share a community bathroom). I rarely see customers and when I do they are almost always well dressed Japanese businessmen going into this suite employing mostly young, attractive, hip Japanese people. We accidentally received some of their mail once and, happy to have an excuse to enter, I went over and took it to them. The place smells rank. Today, after googling them, I see them advertised as a hardware store? Hardware?? I have never seen anything but people go in and out of there. No hardware. There are a few possibilities that would render them a legitimate business establishment, one of which is probably accurate. But to make my long boring days here a little more interesting, I'm going to go on believing they are operating a drug running/prostitution scam twenty feet away from me.

A Hold On Me

The hours of 1 and 2 am have become very familiar to me. Thanks in part to a new work schedule that means never having to be in before 11, and in part to Skins series 1 and 2 on DVD (a gift from my dear friend Shaun Conde), the hour I fall asleep keeps getting pushed later and later. My bed and I now spend many wakeful hours together and have become much better acquainted. Now, instead of simply being a surface to sleep on, it is a place to cuddle up with my laptop and my blanket, watching my favorite british tv actors lead wonderfully dramatic lives.

Part of me really wants to get out of this bed however, and go outside. 2 o'clock in the morning seems to be a magical time to be alone outdoors. So quiet, dark, sometimes foggy, dreamy. If I wasn't plagued by the fear of National City wildlife (skunks, possums, even coyotes), I might. Alas, I am held captive by the fear of, no, not the gang members and drug dealers that may inhabit this ghetto-ish neighborhood, but the skunks. Not your typical co-existing demographics.

Loud Nonsense

I think this November is broken. It is unnatural for it to be this warm. I feel like there is some Rankin/Bass adventure going on somewhere out there. A little woodland creature is on a hunt to find Winter (which has gone into hiding because it felt unloved). I wish that furry little hero the best of luck. Find our beloved Winter and let him know we DO need him. I'm sure Herbert (the name of our animal adventurer) is running into many obstacles and possibly making some friends along the way. He may be joined by such companions as Penny, the South African Penguin who dreams of snow. Or Jack, the cross country skier with two left feet. They'll do their best to make it through the Valley of Heat, governed by the Evil Roberta, hater of all things Winter-like. God-speed little friends.

Friday night I made my way downtown to see a favorite musician of mine play. She was playing at Yoga One, making promises of an "intimate night of music." Well, they delivered. Upon entering the yoga studio where the event was being held, everyone removed their shoes. We sat on the floor, on yoga mats or blankets. Wine was flowing, people were chatting. It was like a musical picnic in the middle of a dance studio. There was alot of group snapping and whistling as the night progressed. 2 1/2 hours later we departed, a little stiff, but thoroughly content.

As you may have noticed, I mentioned group whistling. Sadly, I was unable to participate seeing as how I cannot for the life of me make any sort of sound resembling a whistle. Maybe resembling a dying, mute bird, but not a whistle. The yoga studio, resonating with the sounds of whistles, was definitely a bitter sweet place for a few minutes. I was enjoying the whistling, basking in it almost, but thoroughly disheartened that I couldn't contribute to the joy.
Do you know of any whistling lessons? Is it even something that can be taught?

Rainy Days and Mondays

The weather has been wonderfully fall-like these past few days. The first days of cold bring such a change in people. I've noticed that many young San Diegans love talking about how great cold weather is. However, very few actually seem to appreciate it when it comes. It's wonderful as long as they can stay at home, sleep in, and drink cocoa. But make them get up and go to work in what could only be described as a "sprinkle" and they recoil and complain. I admit, I fall prey to the same attitude at times. It is so much nicer to fall asleep to the sound of rain then have to wake up and go out in it. But I do love the opportunity to wear a scarf, coat, and yes, even leg warmers. Now all I need is a big pile of dried leaves to jump in, and life would be perfect.

With the cold weather, I begin to get more and more excited for the upcoming holidays. Thanksgiving is first. Along with the typical Ring Family partially gluten free feast, I have something extra to look forward to this year. The homecoming of my newly collegiate brother and other friends pursuing a higher education away from home. I'm already planning to make some special homemade applesauce and bake my special zucchini bread in celebration. It shall be a week to cherish, almost a teaser for the Christmas break to come. For December marks my favorite time of year, Christmas-time. The music, the decorations, and most importantly, the smells. I love the smell of Christmas. A good Christmas movie at any time of year can always inspire what can only be described as a "phantom scent." A perfect mix of cinnamon, apples, pine, cranberries, and happiness. I am very grateful for the scented candle industry for helping my bedroom smell like Christmas year-round.

I am getting ahead of myself. November has only just begun. I still have field trips, exams, finals, showcase, and many other things to accomplish before I can truly feel the freedom the holidays allow. But it is the promise of that freedom that makes it a little bit easier to get out of bed and go out into the rain.

"This fog is as thick as my grandmother's pea soup."

National City is covered in a thick fog. Driving home from my very first bachelorette party, I couldn't help but find my city appealing. Normally a den of sex offenders and drug dealers, the streets looked relatively peaceful and inviting. This isn't surprising considering the fact that fog makes everything dreamy. One of the best things were the distinctive beams of light coming from the front of my car. The first image that came to mind as I drove home was that there were two large white lightsabers attached to the front of my car. As I turned a corner and my lights passed over a couple making out (normally skanky, tonight, thanks to the fog, romantic) I imagined they were chopped in half by my sabers. Right through the waist.
Then the fog took my imagination down a different path. Suddenly, the idea of going for a jog was very appealing. Now, I'm not dim enough to think a jog through National City at 12:30 am is a good idea. But maybe, I thought, getting up just before sunrise, driving somewhere joggable like a beach or park, it might still be foggy and I could go for a run then. I found myself imagining that as a daily occurence, practically planning on it.
I don't like running. I don't like getting up early. And I especially don't like doing those things when there is potential that I will have to do them at an hour when it is still dark and cold. But even now, as I type this and the reality sinks in, it still sounds appealing.
I've come to realize that fog is a magical thing. Don't underestimate it's ability to alter your state of mind. Possibly even your whole world. And have fun chopping things in half with your lightsabers.
